A number of researchers at the University of South Australia and Hamburg Medical School in Germany released a study showing that exercise can protect people from serious mental disorders.

The study assessed levels of anxiety and depression among 682 German athletes under different conditions. They undergo the same amount of exercise and intensity. The researchers also measured factors such as indoor and outdoor settings, and team sports compared to individual sports.

One researcher, Katja Siefken, said it was important to recognize that various forms of exercise affect mental health in different ways. Understanding the factors that can influence or reduce depression and anxiety is important, but until now there is not enough evidence regarding the type or optimal amount needed for mental health, said the lecturer at the School of Health Sciences at the University of South Australia.

The researchers found that people who did not exercise, according to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, had higher depression scores.
